About
COSTELLOstudio was founded by London based designer Thomas Costello. A graduate of the Royal College of Art and originally from the North of the UK, Costello worked as an embroidery designer in the luxury fashion sector, developing textiles for a number of European fashion houses before launching the studio in the first quarter of 2021.
What we create
With a background in embroidery, Costello approaches design with a drive and focus for textiles. We create unisex pieces with a contemporary edge, blending traditional techniques such as cross-stitch with digital embroidery. Presenting a graphic, modern look to an otherwise traditional craft whilst balancing historical influences with new.
Design inspiration stems largely from iconography and symbolism; exploring themes of floriography and hidden meaning whilst also subverting typical notions of masculinity and femininity through fabric choice and shape.
How we operate
A conscious effort to reduce waste is at the forefront of design and all items produced by COSTELLOstudio are made from deadstock, recycled or organic fabric. Due to the ethics of material sourcing, garments are either uniquely 1 of 1 or produced in limited drops operating on a made-to-order basis to prevent over production. Once the fabric is used on each particular drop, we can re-use the embroidery design and change the base fabric or colour; giving designs a new lease of life whilst also adding an element of exclusivity to our pieces.
Hardware including vintage buttons date back to the 1940’s and give new purpose to existing materials whilst offering an individuality to each garment.
A celebration of slow fashion, our clothes are made to last and are designed and embroidered in London, UK.
